A chiasm is a literary structure where themes and vocabulary of the first section of a passage are repeated in reverse order in the second. The center of the chiasm is typically the climax of the passage. In Luke 4:15-20 the center and climax is Jesus applying to himself the prophecy of Isaiah, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18-19).
